“Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious that rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.”
Proverbs 8: 10-11
While there is a public elementary school in Garde Saline, a 2012 review of one class showed that only 1 out of 26 students passed their national exams. In addition, parents in the village want their children to have a Christian education as part of their curriculum, so an elementary school has been started through the Baptist Church.
Currently, the school provides Kindergarten through 3rd grade. The plan is to add additional grades, as funding allows. With donor support, The Faith Project has been able to provide school supplies, help fund teacher salaries, and offer some school lunches.
Classes are held in the Baptist Church, which had a very leaky roof when we first came to the village. When it rained, kids had to huddle under the part of the roof that didn’t leak, or, school had to be closed, altogether. In 2013, villagers held a fundraiser and raised enough money to replace four panels of the tin roof, and The Faith Project provided additional funding to replace the balance of the roof. In 2016, with the construction of the new Baptist Church, classrooms were extended into that church building.
The Leadership Council is seeking support from the government and other nonprofits to see if funding can be raised to build a new school.
